Pearly white skin has always been a standard of beauty here in Korea, since earlier days. Many say it's because tanned skin meant you were a lower-class laborer who spent most of your days in the fields, whereas aristocrats could protect themselves from the sun and maintain lighter skin. It sounds quite plausible, though I can't say whether it's completely accurate. In any case, Koreans are quite serious about keeping their skin light. It's the complete opposite of Westerners who want that sun-kissed glow. Funny, innit? We are obsessed with our sunblock, busy covering ourselves up and hiding on those blazing hot sunny days, instead of soaking in the Vitamin D and lying in the sun. Picnics are inside tents and not on an open blanket. Hahaha (no, seriously). That might actually explain why Koreans supposedly have such good skin. That, and the million steps in our skin care routines. If you're the tad bit interested in Korean cosmetics, you will know that there are at least about 10 products you can use in your daily routine.
Another popular treatment available at local dermatology clinics is the glutathione intravenous injection, also known as the whitening injection, or even Beyonce injection, because supposedly Beyonce has been accused in recent years of doing something to her skin to make it lighter. There is absolutely zero proof that Beyonce actually had whitening injections, but some clinics like to advertise that you can become lighter like Beyonce did. Whether she did actually get considerably lighter is a topic that has sparked quite a lot of controversy... that's the downside of being such a mega celebrity; every tiny aspect of your life under public scrutiny. Poor Bey!
Anyway, getting back to my point, what is this whitening injection we're talking about? Glutathione is a molecule that apparently works wonders; there are articles on how this substance can prevent cancer and Alzheimer's disease and a bunch of other illnesses. Though there isn't enough substantial evidence to show whether glutathione is really as miraculous as some say (just being real here), there are definitely some major health benefits to it.
To start off, glutathione is a strong antioxidant. It can remove free radicals as well as detoxify the liver, cleansing it of heavy metals and pollutants. But besides that, it is quite well known for its whitening properties. Glutathione can prevent the activation of enzymes called Tyrosinase, that play a role in producing melanin (cause of pigmentation). Studies have shown that prolonged consumption of glutathione can result in brighter skin as well as improved melasma/acne. They are available in tablets to be taken orally, but effects are shown much faster when taken through intravenous injections. Combine this with other laser treatments, vitamin C iontophoresis, ALA injections etc., and it's even better!
One thing you should keep in mind is that glutathione is not a skin bleacher. It won't turn brown skin into ivory, so be careful of what to expect when you ask for an injection. Furthermore, results start to show with regular sessions, meaning weekly injections for more than 10 weeks.
Sessions last about 15 minutes and are done in a jiffy. So stop by our clinic when you have time to spare and you need something to help detox and rejuvenate. :)
