So Renewme Skin Clinic Seocho branch hired a new aesthetician a couple of months ago, whom is still in the process of learning different skin procedures and facials to practice on patients. Of all the skin care services offered at our clinic, comedone extraction is said to be the most difficult, especially so because in order to practice, you need actual acne patients willing to be dealt with someone who has no experience in extraction. Therefore, most of our regular acne patients aren't an option, and these new aestheticians are left looking for family or other staff members with acne problems, for practice.
That's why today, I was requested to be a guinea pig (perhaps that's too harsh of a term to use here, but that's what it felt like) for this aesthetician. She was a very sweet young lady who thanked me multiple times for agreeing to receive the extraction session, when in fact I was the thankful one; I knew she would be supervised by a senior, and well, I was in bad need of some treatment anyway.
During the process I could hear tips and techniques from the manager, who would watch over every move and patiently guide her along the way, making comments, answering questions, and demonstrating in person. I learned today that there is so much more to comedone extraction than we would normally think, which is why it is imperative that you let a professional do the job instead of picking and popping them at home. There is a lot to pay attention to when extracting comedone: the direction of the follicles, the point at which to start the extraction, using a tiny needle to open up the pores before pressing, differentiating between comedone and flat warts/moles, determining the right time to extract (or leave alone), and most importantly, how to use the extraction tools in a way that is the least painful and won't leave any scars or inflammation on the skin. I had previously thought that it would be possible for me to just buy an extraction tool kit and pop my own blackheads at home, but now I know better.
The whole procedure was quite painful, I'm not going to lie. However, it was a good practice session for the aesthetician, and in return I had a LOT of comedones extracted from my face. Heck, I didn't even know I had that many! I had no idea, but apparently there were plenty on my forehead, along my jaw line, and on my cheeks as well, that weren't so visible at a glance. My face was a red mess by the time I was finished. It would have been useless to take a photo before the session, because most of them wouldn't have shown on camera.
Yup, that's me, back in my office. Hopefully my skin will be a bit smoother after all the redness and bumpiness dies down within a few days. I can definitely understand, though, why this extraction session is so important, and can now recommend it with confidence to acne patients who visit our clinic. If you want to prevent scars and marks from your acne, leave it to the professionals to take care of your skin, instead of taking your own measures at home. You definitely won't regret it!
