Atopic Dermatitis: Tips and Treatments

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disorder that starts at an early age, affecting young children more than adolescents or adults. It can be triggered environmentally or genetically, and seems to be more and more common in Korea as the years go by. Severe cases can affect a patient's adulthood as well, and therefore requires a long-term and systematic medical approach for treatment.

Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis

Symptoms include severe itching  that comes with erythematous papules and scaly skin. The condition can significantly worsen from the scratching, which leads to more itching and more scratching, resulting in a vicious cycle, thicker skin and deep wrinkles.

Symptoms can worsen when the lesions spread widely across the body; when combined with allergic reactions/asthma; when it runs in the family; and when the patient is an only child.

Because of its complexity and difficult nature, it is strongly recommended that you consult a certified dermatology specialist for treatment, rather than relying on home remedies that have not been verified.

Preventative Measures

1. Dryness should be avoided at all costs; especially during the winters. Showers/baths should not be taken so frequently, and use soap as little as possible.

2. Wear cotton clothes instead of other chemical materials such as wool or nylon, and rinse your clothes thoroughly when using a washing machine.

3. Do not use exfoliating towels or scratch the skin with your fingernails as this can worsen the symptoms.

4. Do not wear tight-fitting clothes that can block air circulation can cause sweat.

5. Avoid dairy products, eggs, flour, nuts, seafood, artificial foods, and preservatives that can cause allergic reactions.

6. Keep your skin moisturized all the time; use a humidifier and apply moisturizer frequently.

Treatment Methods

1. UV Radiation Therapy

Studies have shown that UV rays from sunlight can have treatment effects for vitiligo. Using actual sunlight for treatment, however, would require long hours, which can cause burns and other negative side effects. This has led to the development of artificial UV radiation equipment.

2. Excimer Laser

Excimer laser is the best treatment known yet for atopic dermatitis as well as vitiligo or psoriasis. It has proven to be up to 4-6 times more effective than standard UV radiation and is covered by national Korean insurance for areas that are visible (face, lower arms/legs).

3. Steroid/Antibiotics
Often times, atopic dermatitis can get worse due to additional infections caused by scratching. Atopic dermatitis patients often have certain bacteria and toxins that trigger allergic reactions and attack the immune system, which calls for use of medication to control them. Antibiotics are especially effective when the symptoms worsen suddenly in a short period of time.

How To Prevent Sweat (Hands, Armpits, Feet) With Botox

I don't know about you, but I'm the type of person whose hands and feet get clammy super easily. It probably has to do with bad blood circulation, but sometimes it can get quite annoying. I can't wear gloves or thick socks because rather than becoming warm, my hands and feet just get sweaty and actually colder. Holding hands with anyone on a date was a no-no as well; my clammy hands weren't always entirely due to nervousness.

Sweat is our body's way of naturally controlling body temperature and is necessary. However, too much sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is actually a disease that is triggered by stress or emotional stimulation, in which eccrine glands secrete sweat more than the necessary amount to control body temperature. Hyperhidrosis usually takes place on the palms, soles, armpits, face and scalp; and it’s caused by emotional stimulation, rather than changes in temperature.

Medical terminology aside, too much sweat can cause social distress and damage your self confidence. Furthermore, it can cause other skin conditions such as dermatitis, due to the excessive moisture and friction.

So what can be done?

Botox injections have proven to be effective for controlling sweat, by blocking the signals to the sweat glands that produce sweat. The multi-needle injector allows doctors to save time by evenly distributing the botox solution, five tiny needles at a time. Areas applicable are the underarms, hands, and feet.

What are the advantages of botox for hyperhidrosis?

The biggest advantage of botox injections to treat excessive sweating is that surgery is not required. The most drastic solution would be sweat gland suction, but for patients afraid of going under the knife, botox is a safe and effective alternative.
Consequently, unlike surgery, botox injections have no downtime. While sweat gland surgery causes discomforts in the arms for a few days at least and can restrict some of your daily activities, botox injections have none of that.
The downside would be that botox injections are not permanent, and last for a few months.

How is it done?

STEP 1: Numbing cream (topical anesthesia) is applied for 30+ minutes to minimize the pain.

STEP 2: The doctor designs the procedure area, indicating areas where sweat glands are more active.

STEP 3: The multi-needle injector is used to inject the botox onto the treatment area.

Your Reviews Mean SO Much To Us!

As the interpreter for international patients, I try to do my best to make sure y'all have a pleasant and satisfactory experience at our clinic. Your impression of us, how you describe us to your friends and family; when all added up, make up the face that our clinic shows to the rest of the world within and outside of Korea. And as for me personally, since it's my job to guide you through your journey at Renewme Skin Clinic, a small compliment or a kind word of thanks from any patient is more than enough to make my day!

Here is an email I received from a patient this past weekend:

"Thanks for the booking!
The appointment went very well (as usual).
I just want to say a special thank you for the awesome service. As you know, I've been to the Dongdaemun clinic several times in the past few years and I'm always very happy with the service I receive there.
I love the "balibali" service and how quick and organized they are there.
I'm planning on going again next month to touch up my forehead so expect another email from me to book in the near future!
Also I told some of my foreigner friends about Renewme Clinic (you may get some emails) and I am always willing to put in a good word for the service I receive with you guys!
Have a great weekend, and stay warm!"
I asked permission to post this on our website, to which she graciously revised her email to include more information about the treatment itself, and is not available for view at rnmeskin.net.

This was a patient that had received regular botox injections at our clinic, and I was most pleasantly surprised when I received this email, which was totally unexpected!

Not only does her email provide useful information for anyone else looking for a reliable dermatology clinic to go to for botox injections; it makes everyone working at the clinic feel extra special and positively elated as well. :) Which is why we love it when you share your experiences with us and give our ago a boost now and then!

There's a Korean saying that compliments can even make a whale dance (whales don't even live in Korea, I have no idea where this actually came from) which I find is quite true! I do honestly think that the world would be much happier if everyone would pay each other some kind words now and then. It doesn't cost you anything, and it can lift everyone's mood significantly: tell your colleague how much you appreciate her hard work; tell your mother how much you love her; tell the staff at your favorite coffee shop how your latte is exceptionally delicious today thanks to him/her! We all could use a little more love. ^.~

Japanese Spicy Curry "Abiko" Near Gangnam Is Run By A Celebrity!!!

Feeling cold yet? The weather is the coldest so far this winter, with temperatures dropping to as low as 17 degrees below zero!
Se...seventeen?
Anyone in the mood for spicy Japanese curry to warm up your insides? You might have heard of "Abiko," which is a Japanese curry chain in Korea and famous for having different levels of spiciness - for those of you who are brave (or crazy) enough for a challenge, it's the perfect option.

But before that, here's a blog post that is long overdue! Last summer, a new "Abiko" chain opened near our Seocho branch, very close to the famous Seoul Arts Center. It's a popular menu for lunch, so I'd already estimated that the lines would be long, but it turned out this particular Abiko was swarming with people for a different reason: the owner was Song Baek Kyeong, member of 1TYM!

Huh? Who's that? What's 1TYM?

Well, back in the day, before K-pop started dominating the world, there was actually a pretty lively hip hop scene, less commercial or popular than Korean hip hop artists today. Not entirely underground, but not exactly mainstream; 1TYM was a YG Entertainment group that had released some pretty awesome tracks and a few hits that a lot of Koreans are familiar with even if they might know much about the group.

Anyway, 1TYM is not active anymore, and it seems Baek Kyeong had been keeping himself busy by running restaurants. It was awesome to see him there, he was actually at the counter himself, and was happily handing out autographs to anyone who asked. And of course, since it was a chance to see a famous person, and since we like Japanese curry anyway, we had to pay a visit!

Song Baek Kyeong at the counter
Now less talk about celebrities and more about the actual food!!!

Japanese curry in Korea is basically a customized meal: you choose the type of curry, the toppings, and the level of spicy. Maybe some photos of the menu will help you get a better idea:

If you're too lazy to come up with all the details, you can just choose one from the set menus. Overall the prices are around 10,000 KRW, which is not the cheapest but still considered quite affordable.

There are SO many toppings to choose from: vegetarian, pork, chicken, cheese, egg, natto, shrimp... I'm salivating as I write! It's definitely worth a few visits for you to try out everything, and to maybe attempt different levels of spicy. I could only tolerate up to level 2, since I'm a big baby (Korean standards).

It's been a few months now since Abiko opened here, and I'm not sure whether Song Baek Kyeong is still there - he might be busy with other things, and stuff. But visit when you can, because the curry is awesome, regardless of who owns the restaurant!

Men's Skin Care Is On The Rise

Yesterday, Dr. Ha of our Jamsil branch gave an interview regarding men's skin care, and some of the insights she had shared were interesting; so I decided to include some of that in today's blog post.

Good looking guy admiring himself in the mirror because his skin is already perfect
Male skin care is not as common or placed in the spotlight as it is for females, and therefore there is not much awareness on the differences between male and female skin. However, if you, as a man, have the slightest concern for your skin, it's important to know the following:

1. Men generally have thicker skin than women.
2. Therefore, men are more likely to experience deeper wrinkles rather than fine lines.
... Just kidding. :D

3. Men have higher sebum secretion rates than women.
4. This means men generally have oilier skin.
5. This also means men are more likely to have more acne and other inflammations on the face.
6. These inflammations can also be caused by irritating factors such as shaving.

7. Smoking, drinking, and stress have adverse effects on the skin.
8. On the other hand, men tend to have extremely dry skin as well.
9. This means the balance between sebum and moisture is usually broken.
10. UV protection is crucial to maintaining healthy and youthful skin.

Now that you know these basic facts about male skin, taking the next steps to care for your skin should not be so difficult. Just try to find any product that moisturizes but has less oil content, and make sure to protect yourself from UV rays by wearing sun screen. That's not too difficult, right?

As for which product is best to use; that's not easy to answer since there are so many out there in the market. One particular brand that seems to be popular among men in Korea is "Lab Series Skincare for Men." And if you just need a good moisturizer, minus all the  But really, whatever works for you is fine as long as your skin remains moisturized - this balance of oil and water is what strengthens your skin barrier and protects you from external factors that can harm the skin.

Men, don't be afraid to take good care of your skin! Maintaining healthy and beautiful skin is not and should not be particular to any gender. Hopefully more and more people will come to accept this in the future. :)

Plumper Cheeks With Fillers Can Make Your Face Look Brighter

Recently I uploaded a blog post about treatments for dull skin. To give you a quick recap, what makes a face look older and dull can be due a number of factors - pigmentation, dead skin cells and dryness, lack of elasticity, and such. To determine how to best improve a dull looking face, it's best to consult a dermatologist, and decide the best treatment plan for you.

Here is another treatment that is subtle but can help in adding youth and brightness for your face: cheek fillers.

"Why would cheek fillers make me look younger?" you may ask. "I don't want to look chubbier. I want my face to be nice and slim and contoured."

But what if I told you that cheek fillers aren't there to make you look chubbier; in fact, you'd need a LOT of fillers injected to make it look like you've actually gained weight or anything.

First, let's think about what would happen without the cheek fillers. If the following description applies to you, you might want to consider fillers yourself:

You're not exactly old, but you've noticed that your baby fat is disappearing fast. You're tired these days, maybe from studying, maybe from work, maybe from too much partying, but either way lack of sleep or rest has your face look even more sunken. Your face isn't as springy and tight as it used to be. This slight drooping, though not so obvious as you're not exactly old, casts a shadow across your face. There are no curves on your cheeks to reflect the light.

Or, you know, think about what you read in books or novels. People who've gone through great ordeals, or stress, look like they've aged a thousand years - this is depicted by a hollow, gaunt face.

Fillers can treat this by adding just that touch of volume to the cheeks. You look not necessarily fat, but more youthful. Here is as example:

Can you see the subtle differences? The extra volume adds light and creates a more energetic looking face. It can make your face look brighter without any laser treatments for pigmentation or skin tone. And it's not the treatment that is so obvious that all your friends and family can point out that something has been done.

The treatment procedure itself would take about 15-20 minutes, after 30-40 minutes of numbing cream. Downtime is minimal and you can go to work the next day - so whether you are in Korea for vacation, or whether you're working here and want to visit after work, it's all okay, we gotcha.

Clear Your Face of Moles, Warts, Age Spots, & Pigmentation!

During winter break, or while wounds heal faster during the cold weather, is the ideal time to zap away all the moles and warts and things on your face. And just to give you a heads up: asking "how much is laser for pigmentation?" will not result in a very satisfactory answer because different laser types are required for different kinds of pigmentation. Here is a treatment package at our clinic that utilizes the three most important lasers in clearing up your face:

CO2 + IPL + Nd:YAG/Excel V

1. CO2
CO2 laser uses carbon dioxide to vaporize the skin surface, or any skin lesions/skin tags. More than one session may be needed if the lesion in question is too deep, since excessive treatment may leave a scar. CO2 can be used on moles, warts, lentigo, skin tags, syringoma, and such.

2. IPL
IPL, which stands for Intense Pulsed Light, is a cosmetic photorejuvenation procedure that uses a broad ranges of pulsed light to treat wrinkles and pigmentation, and can also be used for hair removal. As for pigmentation, which is the main concern of today's post, IPL is not so much effective for treating specific, darker spots but is great for brightening the overall skin, treating freckles and light spot that are more easily removed.

3. Nd:YAG
Nd:YAG stands the laser medium (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) and can reach deeper into the skin lasers than other lasers. It is an ideal treatment for certain types of pigmentation, such as birthmarks, tattoo removal, age spots, naevus of Ota and such.

4. Excel V

Excel V by Cutera is one of the most advanced lasers in the world, and works well on pigmentation that is relatively superficial. It has a spot-precision tip that can operate in various intensities, as well as three modes that work for vascular conditions, elasticity, and in our case, pigmentation.

Depending on your skin condition, the doctor would suggest either Nd:YAG or Excel V in addition to the CO2 and IPL treatments.

And as for downtime, the treatment would leave little crusts on your face that take a few days to a week or so to heal completely and naturally fall off. For the mole/wart removal, keep on the hydrocolloid dressing tape for about a week to prevent scars, hyperpigmentation or crusting. And it is advised for you to avoid excessive sweating - so sauna, hot baths, really intense workouts are a no-no, as are prolonged periods of time in sunlight.

Take the leap and receive treatment why it's still cold and it's acceptable to spend most of your time indoors and on a Netflix marathon (for er, recovery purposes)!

Treatments For Dull Skin - Recommended By A Dermatologist

"I want to make my skin look brighter."
"My face just looks really dull."

These are common concerns that people may have for their skin. You might have thought you needed whitening treatments for your skin tone, but the fact is that dull skin can occur for any skin type and color, especially during the winter when metabolism is slower and your blood vessels tend to contract.

Now, "dull skin" isn't really a medical term. But since we all understand what you mean when you say that, I've prepared some treatments that can address these concerns and help make your face brighter and glowing (not necessarily lighter in color, it's important to understand this). Here are 4 reasons for dull skin and the possible solutions for each one:

1. Flaky Skin: AquaPeel, Scaling etc.

Remove the dead skin cells and flakes that make your face dull with exfoliating treatment such as AquaPeel and scaling. These are superficial peels for your face that have no downtime and remove all the impurities from the skin, to leave you looking cleaner and fresher.

2. Dry Skin: Cryocell, DermaShine

Dry skin can in turn cause flakiness as well, but in any case, moisture is the key to dewy and glowing skin. If you're not the type to care for your skin at home, stop by a dermatology clinic once in a while for procedure that can help intensely moisturize... though even with such treatments it's still important to moisturize at home.

3. Increase in Melanin: Laser Toning, IPL etc.

Pigmentation is another quite obvious cause of making your face look dull. Removing your face of sun spots, freckles, moles, flat warts, and such can do wonders for a clear and bright face. Since there are many different type of lasers to treat different kinds of pigmentation, it is best to consult a dermatologist first before deciding which laser to use.

4. Elasticity: Ultherapy, Thermage, Shurink, Filler, Sculptra, Rejuran etc.

Once you surpass your thirties, your skin noticeably begins to lose elasticity. This sagging, however slight, is also a reason your skin may look duller. In such cases, treatments that increase collagen production give you a younger and brighter appearance.

Click here for lifting programs. Here is information on Rejuran and Sculptra fillers as well.

Additionally, sunken under eyes can also make you look tired and dull, especially when this sunken area casts further shadows on the face. Dermal fillers are a simple solution for this case:

Another tip is to keep track of all the treatments you've received, and to make sure to receive them regularly if needed. IPL, botox, laser toning, vitamin injections, LED therapy are just some things that have best effects when done regularly.

Keeping healthy and beautiful skin is super crucial when it comes to looking your best. Good skin is the secret to radiant skin that can't be achieved with just makeup! Brighten your face and brighten your day with a treatment at Renewme Skin Clinic.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Treating Acne

Happy New Year, everybody! Although this blog is five days late, today can still be considered the start of 2016, and Renewme Skin Clinic wishes you nothing but health and happiness for the days to come. Fingers crossed that your new year's resolutions will stay strong and not die by the first couple of weeks or so. And since it's the year of the monkey now, here's a little gif for you guys to enjoy:

Getting back to business, the beginning of a new year is a great time to get yourself together and start afresh; additionally, it couldn't be a better time to finally battle that persistent acne and kick off this year with clear new skin! You know the usual, new year new me. And that's what we're here to help you with - it's in our name too (Renew + Me), hee hee.

Now, the most common concern that many patients have regarding skin is acne.

Don't pop your pimples at home like this model, who doesn't seem to have any pimples in the first place anyway!
Acne is a big problem mainly for adolescents but for a lot of adults as well. Severe acne can be a big blow to your self esteem and confidence, which can affect you socially and emotionally. It's natural to want clear skin - it's the face that you present to the rest of the world, a representation of who you are. And no matter what other people may ask about not judging books by its cover and all that, it's not going to change the fact that acne is still a source of stress for many.

Aside from the tons of home remedies you can find on the internet these days, dermatologists at Renewme Skin Clinic will mainly suggest three options to treat acne: 1. medication, 2. scaling, and 3. PDT (photodynamic therapy).

Acne Scaling
Medication comes in the form of oral and topical medication. The most popular oral medication is isotretinoin, which is more commonly known as Accutane in the United States but has many other names and brands in Korea. If this is recommended by the doctor, chances are that it is quite effective, especially for severe acne. However, side effects include but are not limited to dry skin, chapped lips, liver problems (so make sure your liver is healthy if you want to start), fetal deficiencies if you get pregnant during or right after treatment.

Acne scaling is also an effective and of less side effects than medication. A full treatment session includes comedone extraction, cleansing, and a superficial chemical peel that exfoliates the skin and clears the pores for the acne and excess sebum and impurities to escape. For patients to see best results with this particular facial, regular weekly visits are recommended about 5 sessions or more, which can be time consuming if you've got a busy schedule and an active social life, unlike... some of.. us... ahem.

The third option is what is known as photodynamic therapy, or PDT for short. This can also be considered an extension of acne scaling, since the scaling treatment also includes a little bit of phototherapy. But essentially, PDT uses specific wavelengths of light which is exposed on the face after photosensitizer gel is applied - this destroys not only germs and bacteria, but also reduces the sebaceous glands in the skin that produce oil and acne. The PDT equipment we use, called Omega Light, utilizes 4 different wavelengths that each have different effects.

PDT treatment is a great alternative to medication and has less side effects; however, the cons might be that it's costly and isn't covered by insurance, and you need to commit to a couple of hours at the clinic for each treatment session, which is recommended every 3 weeks or so for about 3 sessions total for best results. Also, PDT can leave your skin extra sensitive to light for a few hours after treatment, so it's best to spend the day indoors for a day or two, to avoid sunlight. Furthermore, although this can work as a preventative measure for acne, sebaceous glands can always come back after a while (few months or so), which means that just because you went for a package session does not mean the results will last forever.

To understand which option might be best for you, it is important to consult an experienced dermatologist first and discuss your skin condition. Good luck on your journey to acne-free skin! Renewme Skin Clinic is rooting for you, woot woot.
