Now, the most common concern that many patients have regarding skin is acne.
Acne is a big problem mainly for adolescents but for a lot of adults as well. Severe acne can be a big blow to your self esteem and confidence, which can affect you socially and emotionally. It's natural to want clear skin - it's the face that you present to the rest of the world, a representation of who you are. And no matter what other people may ask about not judging books by its cover and all that, it's not going to change the fact that acne is still a source of stress for many.
Aside from the tons of home remedies you can find on the internet these days, dermatologists at Renewme Skin Clinic will mainly suggest three options to treat acne: 1. medication, 2. scaling, and 3. PDT (photodynamic therapy).
Medication comes in the form of oral and topical medication. The most popular oral medication is isotretinoin, which is more commonly known as Accutane in the United States but has many other names and brands in Korea. If this is recommended by the doctor, chances are that it is quite effective, especially for severe acne. However, side effects include but are not limited to dry skin, chapped lips, liver problems (so make sure your liver is healthy if you want to start), fetal deficiencies if you get pregnant during or right after treatment.
Acne scaling is also an effective and of less side effects than medication. A full treatment session includes comedone extraction, cleansing, and a superficial chemical peel that exfoliates the skin and clears the pores for the acne and excess sebum and impurities to escape. For patients to see best results with this particular facial, regular weekly visits are recommended about 5 sessions or more, which can be time consuming if you've got a busy schedule and an active social life, unlike... some of.. us... ahem.
The third option is what is known as photodynamic therapy, or PDT for short. This can also be considered an extension of acne scaling, since the scaling treatment also includes a little bit of phototherapy. But essentially, PDT uses specific wavelengths of light which is exposed on the face after photosensitizer gel is applied - this destroys not only germs and bacteria, but also reduces the sebaceous glands in the skin that produce oil and acne. The PDT equipment we use, called Omega Light, utilizes 4 different wavelengths that each have different effects.
PDT treatment is a great alternative to medication and has less side effects; however, the cons might be that it's costly and isn't covered by insurance, and you need to commit to a couple of hours at the clinic for each treatment session, which is recommended every 3 weeks or so for about 3 sessions total for best results. Also, PDT can leave your skin extra sensitive to light for a few hours after treatment, so it's best to spend the day indoors for a day or two, to avoid sunlight. Furthermore, although this can work as a preventative measure for acne, sebaceous glands can always come back after a while (few months or so), which means that just because you went for a package session does not mean the results will last forever.
To understand which option might be best for you, it is important to consult an experienced dermatologist first and discuss your skin condition. Good luck on your journey to acne-free skin! Renewme Skin Clinic is rooting for you, woot woot.
