How to Find Our Jamsil Branch

Our Jamsil branch is frequently visited by international patients; opened in April last year, it has clean and high quality facilities, and is at a convenient location for local expats around the area as well as tourists, since it's on subway line 2, one of the busiest in Seoul. However, a lot of patients still have trouble finding the clinic, since the entrance and sign can be a bit inconspicuous and hard to spot. Which is why in today's post, I am going to explain everything you need to know about finding our clinic. If it is your first time visiting our Jamsil branch, give this post a quick read-through and you will be able to navigate much more easily.

First of all, here is the address of our Jamsil branch, both in English and Korean:
Seoul, Songpa-gu, Jamsil-dong 184-21 9th Floor
서울 송파구 잠실동 184-21

Use it to locate on Google maps or whichever map you prefer, to spot our clinic. Or just hand this address to the taxi driver.

1. TAKING THE SUBWAY

We are located at Jamsil Saenae (잠실새내) Station, exit 4.  Note that this is NOT Jamsil (잠실) Station. This is what happens if you misunderstand the station name:
This is what subway line 2 looks like. It's a loop.Which means if you get the two names confused, Jamsil station and Jamsil saenae station. So I repeat, make sure you are heading for Jamsil Saenae(잠실새내) station, which is the one between Jamsil (잠실) and Sports Complex (종합운동장)stations.

Once you walk out of exit 4, this is what you should see. Look for the Subway and Baskin Robbins.

From exit 4, walk straight ahead for about 2 minutes. You'll pass by familiar stores (if you've been in Korea for a bit) such as Paris Baguette, Olive Young, and a bunch of Korean cosmetic brands. Walk until you see KEB bank. Don't get confused again: it's KEB bank, not KB. This is what the bank looks like, with our clinic entrance on the left:

Take the elevator on the left, up to the 9th floor.

2. COMING BY TAXI
Taking the taxi is obviously a lot simpler, because all you need to do is provide the driver with the address. HOWEVER, for some reason, when most drivers use GPS to drive to the provided address, they drop you off at the rear side of the building, leaving many patients confused and lost. When you're coming by taxi, the trick is to spot the KEB bank as usual, then Lotteria (fast food restaurant), since you'll need to make your way to the front of the building by going around Lotteria.

Once you turn the corner at Lotteria you will be able to spot the KEB bank front entrance, and the entrance to our clinic as well.

I hope this helps, and that now you will be able to found our clinic without any difficulty. And er... I just read through the post I just wrote, to proofread, and it seems like I'm ranting. But I promise, I'm not annoyed or anything, I just want to be very clear on the instructions so you guys won't go through any trouble. Hehe. Good luck! :-)

Bagels Galore at MONO CHEESE in Gangnam, Seoul!

I've always had a soft spot for bagels. It gets me all nostalgic, thinking about my younger days when I was living in the US, and my dad would buy freshly baked bagels from the local shop, with homemade cream cheese. Those things were seriously so good - chewy and hearty and simply delicious. I'm not sure how other people might think, but I would say that New York's bagel game is pretty strong, which is why during my life here in Seoul I was disappointed quite often every time I tried a bagel. It just wasn't the same. And they only had about 2-3 types of bagels, and only one kind of cream cheese, which was no fun at all.

When I heard that a bagel store opened up near Nambu Terminal, near Renewme Skin Clinic Seocho branch, I was naturally ecstatic. This place had about 10 different types of cream cheese, which weren't exactly like the ones I had in New York but it was still a break from boring old plain. I made it my personal mission to try each flavor and show it to you guys.

How to get there: go straight from Nambu Terminal station (line 3) exit 6, and turn right at the first alleyway for about 20 meters. Mono Cheese is a tiny little cafe with a cozy interior. They are open Monday-Saturday until 9 pm, and deliver as well, if you order more than 20,000 KRW. And they've got several menus, actually, and not just bagels - paninis, grilled cheese sandwiches, cheesecake milkshakes, and coffee beverages. I wasn't interested in the rest (though I tried the milkshake once, which was great), because they didn't look particularly authentic... if there is such a thing as an authentic grilled cheese. :D

So yeah, I tried the bagels. My first thought upon ordering was: I can't give this place a high rating, for two reasons. One, they have different cream cheeses, but only one type of bagel. Second, they don't make their own bagels! The bagels are the factory-made kind, and have a very synthetic, low-quality texture which I was not pleased about. The cream cheese were pretty good, though, and they make sure to really pile it on the bagels, so that was a plus.

Blueberry
Honey Walnut
Jalapeno
Mango Cranberry
Pimento
Salmon
Strawberry Earl Grey
I tried six so far, but I'm not really interested in the other ones, which included Nutella, Honey Walnut, Cookies and Cream (for a bagel???)... and I think that's it. They were all not bad, but not particularly fantastic either, mainly because I was not very satisfied with the bread. My favorite cream cheese by far was the pimento, which has pepper bits inside, which really balances out the heaviness and richness of the cheese. Strawberry was the runner up, but it tasted more like a dessert. Very sweet and tangy.

Momo Cheese is still an quick and easy spot for something simple and affordable; if you are in the area you might definitely want to give this place a try!

"DermaShine" Hyaluronic Acid Injection Promotion & Self Care for Ultimate Moisture

With chilly autumn winds rapidly approaching our way, it's time to prepare your skin for the dry harsh weather to come. Often times in cold temperatures, we find ourselves with cracked, dry, flaking skin that requires extra moisturizing care in contrast to humid summers. If only you could find some way to keep your skin nice and hydrated without having to constantly remind yourself to apply lots and lots of creams or moisturizers! Well I am here to tell you that yes, there is a way - a popular treatment in Korea, also known locally as the "water shine" injection.

Water Shine injection (aka DermaShine, after the name of the equipment), is a treatment that consists of hyaluronic acid being evenly  injected all across the face. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that already exists in our bodies, but decreases over age - you'll notice that older people tend to have drier and more paper-like skin. HA has exceptional water retaining capacities and is used for dermal filler injections, to restore volume in the face. But when distributed evenly across the skin instead of just targeting one area, you'll have the moisturizing effects for your skin without having to apply it topically. Moreover, this stuff stays inside your skin instead of just on the surface, which makes it much more effective than any other moisturizer.

DermaShine also works best when paired with PRP (platelet rich plasma). This is obtained by extracting the patient's own blood, then placing it in a centrifuging machine which separates the PRP. This PRP is injected back into the skin to help with healing and skin rejuvenation. This was also a big hit when Kim Kardashian posted a photo of herself receiving this treatment, and now it's known as the "vampire injection" too. Ladies in Korea (and even celebrities) are in love with this procedure, which was even featured on television. Take a look at our own Dr. Ha Ji Hyun of our Jamsil branch, explaining about PRP DermaShine:

Additionally, this is what you might expect as results: dewy, glowing skin, and easier, smoother application of your makeup.

Interested? One session of PRP DermaShine currently costs 800,000 KRW at our clinic. At the moment, for a limited time we are offering some pretty good add-on packages, allowing you to purchase products or receive additional treatments at a discounted price, when paired with the PRP DermaShine.

To maximize the effects of DermaShine it is best to keep your skin as moisturized as possible for the following months. At Renewme Skin Clinic we offer our own line of cosmetic products, created and tested by our own dermatology specialists. This package also includes 10 sheets of high-quality moisturizing sheet masks, sun cream, and derma cooler, a hand-held cooler that you can use instead of messy melting ice blocks to soothe and calm down the skin after any facial procedures.

You can also read more about our Dermotoxin procedure by reading this blog post.

Excimer Laser Treatment in Seoul for Vitiligo/Psoriasis/Atopic Dermatitis

Howdy, everyone. August, and consequently summer, is slowly coming to an end. As if the sky is able to feel my gloom, it's been rainy and dreary for the past couple of days. I've been in long pants and a cardigan all day, the first in a long while, and we haven't even turned on the air conditioner at the office - I think that says it all about the change in weather (for me, anyway). In any case, I hope everyone has had at least some sort of opportunity to enjoy the summer. For students, now is the perfect chance to start a new semester afresh, with motivation levels at 110%. Hwai-ting (Korean pronunciation of 'fighting': phrase of encouragement)!!!

Today's post is more for the expats who are living in Korea, rather than the tourists who only have a few days to stay. Dermatology clinics are not visited solely for cosmetic purposes; it is a medical clinic like any other, but specializing in the skin. You might be surprised as to how many different types of lesions, skin conditions, disorders etc. can be found in the skin, though you actually shouldn't be surprised because the skin is actually the largest organ in the body. And of course, some skin diseases are much difficult to treat than others.

For the more difficult treatments, a very important factor to consider when looking for a clinic is the equipment that is available. Good equipment means better and more effective treatment, and at Renewme Skin Clinic we make sure to use the best machines available, chosen carefully after years of trial and error. Our goal is to be able to treat patients in all aspects related to skin, from cosmetic and anti-aging procedures to treatment for serious disorders; which is why all six branches of Renewme Skin Clinic have also invested in an excimer laser. Just the other day, Dr. Choi, head doctor at our Bundang branch, gave an interview on TV about this special machine.

Would you look at that! We're famous! :D But in all seriousness, what is excimer laser anyway?

Excimer laser is a type of ultraviolet laser that has a broad range of uses including LASIK eye surgery and photolithography. For dermatologists, the xenon chloride excimer laser is used for treating skin conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, and leukoderma. Unlike conventional ultraviolet therapy, the excimer laser allows a singular wavelength to be concentrated solely on the treatment area, meaning less potential damage to the surrounding healthy skin cells.

Before and after excimer laser treatment
Now, excimer laser treatment can be quite costly. Moreover, it requires steady, regular sessions if you want to see improvement, which is why it's recommended to receive treatment in the country you plan to live in for long-term. If you're worried about the pricing, for visible areas (face, under elbows, under knees), excimer laser treatment can be covered partly by Korean national health insurance, making it much more affordable if this applies to you. If it does, make sure to prepare your ARC and health insurance when you visit.

I should also mention that excimer laser is not commonly available at your local skin clinic - it is used more in general hospitals that require a referral for you to receive treatment. But you can receive the same-quality treatment, by experienced dermatology specialists, right here in our own clinic. This takes you a step closer to finding a solution to whichever skin condition that concerns you. Contact Renewme Skin Clinic today, for consultation and/or appointment!

Laser Tattoo Removal in Seoul Korea

Tattoos have a long history and throughout the years have served a lot more purposes as we might have originally thought. They can be used for medical purposes, identification purposes, advertising purposes, religious purposes, and more. Some are purely functional, and some are more of a cultural ritual. The most common tattoo that we are aware of, of course, is the cosmetic tattoo, which serves to decorate the body. This type of tattoo is a pretty big commitment and should always be thoroughly considered before you go through with the actual procedure. We all know that the removal process is even more painful and cumbersome, so you better make sure you won't have any regrets before making the big decision. I've actually just googled "stupid tattoos" for fun - you should try it too, if you're bored. You'll find a few unbelievable results that will have you facepalming in no time, and probably thinking twice before you get tatted yourself.

Tramautic tattoos on the other hand, refer to pigmentation that has been caused by injury or by insertion of dark-colored substances such as coal dust or gunpowder, occur against one's will.

Regardless of how they came to be, tattoos leave a permanent mark on the skin and are extremely difficult to remove. Not that it's totally impossible; there are laser treatments for removing tattoos which, with regular sessions can make the tattoo considerably lighter. If you are looking for a clinic that can help remove your tattoo, it's important to keep the following in mind:
  • Find a certified dermatologist who has experience in using the laser for tattoo removal, and who is able to determine whether or not laser removal treatment is applicable to your tattoo. Doctors that lack in experience might cause damage to the surrounding tissues and will do more harm than good.
  • Tattoo removal does not work well on colored tattoos; simple, black ink tattoos can be removed much easily.
  • Depending on how deep the tattoo is, you will need at least 5 monthly sessions to see improvement, sometimes even more.
  • To learn the approximate cost of treatment, send us a photo in advance, explaining the size of the tattoo approximately in centimeters and we will provide a quotation.

Here is also a video of what a tattoo removal session will be like. Enjoy!

Big Big Big Mole Removal! :D

One thing I noticed while translating for our English speaking patients is that a lot of foreigners are actually quite affectionate towards their moles. I suppose they're also called "beauty marks" for a reason; they can give your face character and uniqueness, which is considered positive in many individualistic Western cultures. Personally, I believe that this is a healthy way of perceiving one's body image, and quite understandable. That's not to say I'm against people who want to remove moles; I can also 100% relate to those who want a perfectly clear face - which is a more common mindset here in Korea, and which also might be another reason why Koreans seem to all have such good skin.

Anyway, that was my random observation of the day. Today I'm writing to show you a mole removal session on our Chinese interpreter Mandy; she had a rather large one on her chin which was treated with CO2 laser at our clinic.

Numbing cream is first applied to the treatment area for about 40 minutes.

CO2 Laser
CO2 laser uses carbon dioxide to vaporize the skin surface, and is effective in removing moles, warts, and other skin growths on the skin. Due to the help of numbing cream, patients hardly feel any pain during the actual treatment - for one mole, the whole procedure may take about 5-10 minutes.

Once the laser session is over you are advised to keep on the dressing tape for at least a week to prevent scarring or further pigmentation. Avoid the sunlight during this period, as well as sauna and hot baths. And remember to apply plenty of sunscreen! Once the wound completely heals over you can visit after a month or two for a second session.

Very simple, isn't it? Keep in mind that mole removal costs can differ based on size and quantity, so send us a photo in advance if you would like to receive an estimate quotation before visiting.

Fat Grafting at Renewme Skin Clinic Korea - Real Results

When you start doing research on big cosmetic procedures such as fat graft (or plastic surgery, mostly), candid before and after photos are one of the biggest factors that influence your choice of clinic. You want to see real patients - not photoshopped, not sponsored - but not many patients are so willing to expose their faces online. There are certain communities created solely for this purpose; a platform for people to share their testimonials of different cosmetic procedures as to provide an honest guideline during your quest to find the perfect clinic. Even so, it's not an easy task, to see real patient testimonials and photos.

Although this post is written by the clinic, neither the patient nor her photos were in any way requested by us. Guo Jie, who is from China, sent us her photos to let us know how satisfied she was with her results, and told us that we were more than welcome to share them to anyone willing to see. We are truly grateful for this act of kindness! Now, thanks to her, we can show you an example of one of our recent patients' fat graft results, and give you an idea of what kind of what to expect after fat graft.

Before I head on with the photos, I think it's important to mention that fat graft is still different from plastic surgery. The results are not permanent, although fat graft does last longer than regular dermal fillers. Some of the changes you see might be subtle, but most important is what the patient feels rather than what others see. Fat graft is a treatment that can enhance your facial features naturally (once the downtime is over), restoring volume and improving your facial shape with your own fat, making the treatment free of allergic reactions and quite safe.

This is Guo Jie's before photos. One is a professional profile photo (she is a newscaster) and one is a regular selfie. She's already quite beautiful, as you can see, but her features look a bit sharp, especially in the cheekbone and chin area. This is mainly due to the fact that her face is lacking fat/volume, which can accentuate the sagging, making it look more prominent and defined.

Now let's take a look at her after photos!

BEFORE AND AFTER
We did not make any changes or add filters to any of the photos; they are exactly as were sent to us by the patient. You will be able to notice the subtle differences. She still looks like the same person, but her cheeks are fuller and softer. The overall plumper face makes her look much more youthful and lively.

A big thank you to Guo Jie for sending in the photos! Hopefully this will offer some help to those of you who are considering full face PRP fat graft. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions!

Latest Treatment for Tear Trough/Under-Eye Bags and Dark Circles

"Are you okay today? You look tired."
"I'm perfectly fine. It's just my face."

How annoying is it to hear that all the time? If you've had loads of conversations even remotely similar to the one above, this blog post is definitely for you. I mean, it really can get exasperating, you know; to realize that regardless of how you're feeling that day, no matter how rejuvenated and alert you feel, people are always thinking that you look tired. Hmmm... or actually, I can't pick which is worse: that, or dying inside while outwardly you look perfectly healthy and energized, your face not even reflecting a fraction of your pain.

Unnecessary dilemmas aside (I should stop getting so sidetracked all the time), the biggest perpetrator of a tired looking face would be sunken/sagging under-eyes with deep, dark shadows. They appear mostly when you lack sleep or when you're under a lot of stress. Even worse, they make you look older. You might have read in a novel or something about someone who goes through a stressful period, and they end up "aging a few years" in a super short period of time. Gaunt, aggravated faces, when presented in photos or even your imagination, usually includes sunken and dark under-eyes as well.

Besides creams and covering up with makeup (which might alleviate temporarily but can worsen in the long run), what are some treatments you can consider for those eye bags? At Renewme Skin Clinic we offer a number of options catered to different causes of dark circles/bags. The most important advantage of the treatments we provide might be that they are all minimally invasive, which means you can avoid any big surgeries or major downtime, but still see results. How cool is that? You can go back to work after a weekend as if nothing happened!

1. Radiofrequency Treatment - INNOfill

INNOfill is an intradermal procedure. A needle is inserted into the tear trough area, after which radiofrequency is emitted from the tip to stimulate collagen regeneration. The result is tightened and rejuvenated skin from within. This procedure is recommended for sagging eye bags that are caused by lack of elasticity. You can also read a full account at this previous blog post.

2. Dermal Filler

This is the more commonly known procedure. Hyaluronic acid fillers (popular brands used at our clinic are Yvoire and Restylane) are a great way to restore lost volume under the eyes. If this area is sunken, they can cast shadows that make your dark circles look even worse. They can also help with some deep wrinkles that form under the skin. Though not always perfectly effective, if you happen to be the right candidate, you will see some pretty good results that last up to about a year. I have seen plenty of satisfied patients that say they don't have to go through that old "you looked tired" routine anymore after this procedure.

3. Laser Treatment

Another cause of dark circles might actually be the blood vessels that show through the skin. The skin directly underneath the eyes can be very thin, and more susceptible to wrinkles and fine lines - which also means that maintaining moisture in this area is very important. Not necessarily expensive eye cream; any moisturizer should do. Anyway, the veins showing through can give your tear troughs a bluish tinge. This can be especially hard to treat because the best solution would be to thicken the skin, which with current medical technology is not possible. And if your skin in this area is especially thin, dermal fillers might not work either because the clear filler solution might reflect the colors from the blood vessels underneath, sort of acting like a magnifying glass and intensifying the hue, which would be the total opposite of what you're aiming for.
Luckily, if you happen to have the right type of blood vessels in the right spots, they can be treated with a laser, specifically called Excel V. Excel V works well on vascular conditions such as spider veins and rosacea, and with regular treatment sessions (usually 3-5, spaced about a month apart), elimination of these blood vessels can make your under eyes appear brighter.

Now, before you decide which treatments you want, it's most important that you consult the doctor first. You might think that you need option A, and then discover that the treatment you needed was actually option B. Discuss your skin condition with an experienced dermatologist at Renewme Skin Clinic and select the right procedure for you.
