Pigmentation on the skin can take on many different forms; as the largest organ of the body, it's no surprise that our skin always seems to find some way to make us concerned. If you think about it, even trivial matters on the skin seem like a big deal because unlike the other organs that are tucked away inside our bodies and aren't visible unless you're cut open (let's hope that never happens though), our skin covers our whole body and is visible for the whole world to see, serving as a standard of aesthetic beauty. Slight sagging, fine lines, birthmarks, and such... these are completely harmless and treating these don't serve much medical purpose, but nevertheless people spend quite a bit of money trying to improve them, one of the most important being skin pigmentation.
And as I have written countless times in previous blog posts, since there are so many different types of pigmentation and treatment also varies, it is up to the skill and experience of the doctor to properly diagnose your condition and offer the right treatments. Using the laser is also something that requires skill and technique, otherwise you might be left with burns, scars, or more problems than you started off with!
A particularly difficult pigmentation to treat is called Nevus of Ota, which is characterized by a bluish hyperpigmentation which occurs from birth or during puberty, normally around the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. It occurs in females about 2-5 times more than male patients. Nevus of Ota is not treatable in a singular session, but with time and regular treatment, we can definitely see results.
Here is a patient in her late twenties who underwent five sessions of Nd:YAG laser. The results have been quite satisfactory for her case.
