The Best Treatment for Dry Skin - Secret to Perfect Korean Skin Part 1

Hey everyone, Sam here. Today I'll talk about something that's always been a pain in the butt during the dry winter season in Korea - maintaining soft, moisturized skin.

Before I do that, let's face this little fact: if you are a non-Korean who has visited Korea or has a bunch of Korean friends, you probably thought at one point that Koreans all seem to have great skin. I've heard a lot of tourist/expat friends say that to me as well. Am I right? Do you think that's true?

If it is, I wouldn't be surprised. Skin care, avoiding the sun, applying loads of sunscreen, a billion steps in our daily skin care routine - we put in a lot of effort to have good skin. For celebrities, it's probably a bigger burden because the TV's are so much better these days; so good, in fact, that they show everything. Every little mole, pore, zit, hair... you get it. Plus, dermatology clinics are just so available in Korea; you can find a handful in any neighborhood, and they're all pretty cheap too (*cough, Renewme)!

Now, these days, the skin trend in Korea (is it weird that there's a trend in skin tone, too? ^^) is the 'water shine' skin.

Hmmmm. So how do I explain this....

"Water shine" is the literal translation of 물광 (mulkwang). It refers to dewy, hyper-moisturized, glowing, shiny skin. An example:

Does that make sense now? That perfect, natural looking skin? I should also note it can't look like there are layers and layers of foundation on top: it has to look natural. As a Korean, I think it's a bit funny that just a few years ago, people might have said she needs an oil sheet or something. But now, we all think she's just really moisturized. And we envy that. Rightly so, because dry skin leads to quicker aging, and who on earth would want that?!

And even if we don't want that perfect skin, dry skin can get really annoying because of that tightening sensation after washing your face, and because it can get rough and scaly and flaky and just not very flattering. And I don't even need to mention the aging (except I already did, a paragraph ago).  So how do we keep our skin hydrated, especially during our dry winters?

Well, we have our usual answers: drink plenty of water, apply moisturizer, spray facial mist, etc. etc. but wanna know a big secret?

It's called hyaluronic acid (HA).

OK, maybe it's not a big secret. It's pretty well known as a moisturizer, and it's included in a bunch of creams and lotions and lipsticks and everything. It's taken in pills. It's used for dermal fillers. It's everywhere if you are already interested in skin care.

But the HA water shine injection I'm talking about is not a regular needle. It's not a topical treatment. And I actually thought it would be pretty common worldwide, so I tried googling it but I didn't get a lot of results. So maybe I don't know the exact name of it... but this HA injection is seriously amazing. And if you knew what it did, you'd sign up for one right away!

I want to tell you all about it now, but I had no idea that this post would get so long. So more details, photos, videos etc. in the next post! Stay tuned ;)
