2015 June Korea Cosmetic Dermatology Hands-on Course Seminar

It's around that time again; Renewme Skin Clinic Network is hosting another regular seminar & hands-on course for popular cosmetic dermatology procedures! You can click here to check out our seminar page for more information and videos on what you might be able to expect. Unlike our previous seminar, which covered a wide variety of topics, our seminar this time will focus more on actual procedures and hands-on courses for fellow dermatologists from abroad who are interested in Korean skin treatments. Furthermore, we have also prepared programs for aestheticians, in case doctors would like their staff to accompany them on their trip. The seminar will also be a chance for doctors to purchase treatment materials such as fillers, botox, and PDO threads, at a discounted price, as well as an opportunity to observe Korean dermatologists at work, and understand how our clinic network operates. If you're interested in participating, feel free to drop us a message through th...

Beware of Vitamin D Deficiency!

The weather is absolutely gorgeous lately; it's the type of day that makes you want to ditch everything, find the nearest park, and just lie in the grass with a simple picnic of bread and cheese and grape juice (random I know, but I'm craving it at the moment), along with a gripping novel that you can enjoy for hours while soaking in the sun. If only we weren't burdened with the responsibility of having to work in an office all week to make a living... Daydreaming aside, it's actually quite important to fulfill your daily intake of sunlight. And by this, I'm specifically referring to the vitamin D that sunlight helps us absorb. Now if your levels are below 20 ng/ml, then it means you have a deficiency. Sadly, most Koreans (93.3% of women, 86.8% of men) have a vitamin D deficiency, which is 9 times more than the statistics from 5 years ago. What!!!  ...well, on second thought actually, it's not so surprising. We spend most of our time indoors, finish work a...

Folliculitis - What You Need To Know

Folliculitis is a common skin condition that can easily be mistaken for acne at first glance. It might be best to have some information in mind, as to not get confused when you notice breakouts across your skin in the future! If you do notice anything strange, always remember that it is best to consult your doctor first for diagnosis before trying any remedies at home. In the meantime, let's get you educated on what exactly folliculitis is. As the name might suggest, folliculitis is an infection in the follicles. And what are follicles? Why, I'm glad you asked. Follicles refer to the tiny little pouches from which each hair grows out. They exist all over the body on any area that has hair... and that includes your chest, back, legs, arms, and even your butt. These follicles can become infected by a virus or the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, and depending on the depth and severity of the infection requires light treatment or a visit to the doctor. So how do you get fol...

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatment in Seoul Korea

Dr. Kim Duk Han MD If you're looking for a mild, simple laser for treating pigmentation or to improve general skin tone, IPL might be just what you need. With no pain or downtime, this is a popular procedure that can leave your face clearer and brighter. IPL (standing for Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment stronger than previous lasers, that can selectively target pigmentation. If most lasers use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a combination of wavelengths and can therefore reach different parts/layers of the skin, simultaneously treating more than one type of lesion/pigmentation. It is used for a variety of purposes, including permanent hair removal, vascular treatment, phototherapy, and so forth. IPL is an increasingly popular treatment option all over the world, and its safety has already been approved by the FDA US.  The best part? This treatment is virtually painless and has no downtime. What are its effects? The biggest advantage of IPL might be its ability ...

How to Select Proper Cosmetic Products for Your Skin

The trends in selecting foods and products have shifted considerably over the years. People are increasingly looking for items that are healthier and free of artificial/chemical ingredients. Detoxification is the new big thing. And especially with the overflow of information on the internet, these days we are constantly bombarded with tips for being healthier, cleaner, more organic. Cosmetic products are no exception. If you have even the slightest knowledge of beauty products in Korea, you will know that there is an endless supply of products to choose from, the majority available at quite affordable prices. It may be overwhelming; how can you know which one is good for you ? Now, a lot of folks would tend toward cosmetics with labels such as "hypoallergenic" or "organic" or basically anything that suggests that the product is gentler and well suited for sensitive skin. However, just because it's labeled that way does not  mean that you should select it...

Gilbert's Burger & Fries in Gangnam

Who loves a good burger? ME!!! I am always on the hunt for a good juicy burger... though to be honest, I love McDonald's and Burger King just as much! Today we ventured out a little further from our usual boundaries and checked out a burger joint called Gilbert's Burger and Fries. This place also has a chain at Garosugil, so if you're closer to that area you can go there instead. At first glance, the place hardly looks like a restaurant if not for the tables and chairs set outside. The sign is very minimalist and actually a bit hard to miss. Plus, it's located in an alleyway that barely has any other restaurants nearby, just a cafe or two. However, one step inside and you're in for a cozy, Western-like atmosphere. All the drinks here seem to be imported - I couldn't see any Korean brands. If you visit during lunch hour, you can get a pretty good deal - a junior burger, with fries and a drink for only 12,000 won! Take a look at the menu too...

Treatment for Athlete's Foot in Seoul Korea

Athlete's foot is the most common type of fungal infection in Korea. It makes up 33-40% of all cases of mycosis, typically in adult patients in their twenties to forties. That being said, it's good to know the general causes and symptoms in order to prevent catching it yourself. Simply put, athlete's foot is an infection caused by the fungi trichophyton , normally on the soles of the feet and between the toes. Fungi thrive in warm, damp, and moist environments, which make sweaty feet and hands the perfect hideout. They settle in the outer layers of the epidermis, where sweat glucose actually serves as nutrients for the bacteria. So what causes athlete's foot? There may be several factors behind fungal infection, but sweaty feet/hands serve as the biggest cause. Tight shoes or socks that cause sweat, or not drying thoroughly after swimming or showering can be other reasons. Symptoms include itchiness, hardened skin, flakiness/scaliness, weakened nails, and in sever...

High Quality Naengmyun (Cold Noodles) In Gangnam, Seoul

Let's jump right into it! There's a restaurant just 3 minutes from Nambu Bus Terminal Station (Renewme Skin Clinic Seocho Branch) called "Naju Gomtang." Naju is the name of a city famous for gomtang , a type of Korean soup with chunks of beef and a hearty, rich broth. So naturally, you can guess the main dish served at this restaurant. Other than traditional gomtang, however, the place also serves various dishes that require a delicious beef broth, such as dumpling soup. A limited-time menu is naengmyeon (cold noodles), which is only available in the summer. We pounced on it as soon as it was available! Walk straight down from Nambu Terminal Station exit 6 until you see this sign! By 12 o'clock noon, the typical lunchtime for most office workers around the area, this place was completely packed. Luckily, I arrived 15 minutes early to save a spot for myself and my coworkers. Kimchi, to many Koreans, is the most important side dish to any meal. ...

How to Fix a Weak or Short Chin in Seoul Korea

A strong and prominent chin can do a lot for a person's appearance. Some recent studies have shown that ovulating women tend to find stronger chins/jaws more attractive; and although of course we can't be 100% sure, we generally associate this particular feature with masculinity. However, this doesn't just apply to men, people. If you think about it, we all strive for sharp and well defined features because it gives off a reassuring and trustworthy impression. Why else would all those ladies emphasize contouring in their makeup tutorials? Anyway, let's talk about short chins today, and how to fix them to get that defined face we want. What exactly is a short chin? To check if you've got one yourself, take a straight object (such as a ruler or pen) and connect the tip of your nose to your mouth. Where do you find the end of your chin? If it lies under the line, then boom, you've got a short chin. I've also met with quite a few patients who had come to...

Rejuran Healer for Treating Neck Wrinkles in Korea

There are a few parts of the body that give away a person's age: mainly the hands, knees, and neck. These are places that are neglected to be taken care of compared to the face, and as our skin starts to lose elasticity, the wrinkles are simply unavoidable. Compared to other parts, however, there are actually some treatment options available for neck wrinkles. Besides aging, other factors that contribute to neck wrinkles may include genetics, high pillows, and most importantly these days - the increased use in smartphones that keep us constantly looking down. Since the causes, skin type/condition, and age all differ among patients, it is strongly recommended that you consult a dermatologist first before deciding what treatments are best for your own neck wrinkles. After thorough examination, the doctor would suggest treatments such as fillers, thread lift, laser treatment, fat grafting, and so forth. Rejuran is a recent treatment that has been receiving a lot of attention here...

Common Medications Used for Skin Treatment

Drugs and medication used for dermatology/skin disorders have a reputation of being potent, and are actually avoided by a lot of patients here in Korea. There are a lot of false information and rumors about side effects going around regarding skin medication, that may be why patients shy away from prescriptions. True, there are some medications that can make you feel drowsy, but that also applies to pills for the flu or common cold. Medications for the skin are actually quite safe, and carefully selected by our dermatologists so that it will make your skin better and not worse. Here are typical prescriptions you can expect from your dermatologist: 1. Antihistamines Antihistamines block the receptors of histamine, therefore preventing the uncontrollable itchiness that occurs from dermatitis, hives, rashes etc. Some side effects might include drowsiness, thirst, or constipation, leading to the assumption that this medication is strong. However, antihistamines have been used by ENT do...
