This is a blog post contribution by Dr. Ko Na Young, head dermatologist of our Hwagok branch. The original post in Korean, can be read by clicking here.
I feel this each time, but we are really grateful for Dr. Ko's efforts to help with the blogging, and her determination to share with everyone her personal experiences and views on the latest skin treatments. It's an insight that is not so easily accessible, especially for those who want a professional opinion or testimonial amidst the overflow of information online, and we really appreciate everything she is doing for us!
Earlier this year, my mother went for semi-permanent eyebrow makeup treatment, and was unhappy with the results because her eyebrows turned out too thick and dark. We thought it would get better after waiting a week or two, but even after a month her brows were very unnatural and black, while my mother had aimed for natural-looking brown eyebrows. Then around March, we took a selfie together and all I could see were her dark eyebrows. I thought it also made her look a bit fierce. She went back to where she received the treatment to complain, but was disappointed when all they told her was to keep waiting.
I told my mother to come to my clinic to see what I could do for her. Tattoo removal normally consists of Nd:YAG laser treatment (used for pigmentation) in regular sessions once a month.
Treatment for my mother was especially tricky and difficult because firstly, her eyebrows were too dark and thick. If the laser treatment was done too intensely, it could result in blisters or scarring, and possible leave her eyebrows spotted and not evenly colored. Furthermore, my mother didn't want to completely remove the semi-permanent makeup; she just wanted it to leave it a bit faded and natural looking.
So in the beginning, I started off with weak laser treatment and added fractional laser treatment as well. Fractional laser can reduce the risk of side effects such as bruising, while heightening the effects of pigmentation laser, which is why at our clinic, the two laser treatments are used in combination for tattoo removal.
The photo below was after one treatment session, in May. The color had slightly faded but her eyebrows were still very strong.
The photo below was taken in June, after her second session. Her thick eyebrow tattoo has been reduced a bit. I used a stronger laser around the borderline and a weaker energy on the inside to make the eyebrow shape as natural as possible.
The last photo below was taken around Chuseok, after 3 sessions of Nd:YAG and fractional laser. Her eyebrows are now brown and natural looking, making her facial expression appear a lot softer.
I gave extra attention to this particular patient because she was my mother, of course, but I was relieved to hear that she was very happy with the results. It was also a chance for me to realize how important of a role the eyebrows play in determining the first impression of a person.
These days in Korea, straight eyebrows that make you look kind and young are the trend. If you are not satisfied with your current, outdated eyebrow tattoos, whether it be because of the shape or the color, they can be revised and removed with lasers at a dermatology clinic.
The latest semi-permanent eyebrow makeup has been known to not react as well to lasers, but with combinations of treatments and patience, you can see good results too!
