Q. How tell each birthmark?

1. Nevus of Ota

Nevus of Ota is appeared by birth and after birth on the face. The color is blue and blue-greenish hyper pigmentation that occurs mainly on face. Most of Ota shows one side of face normally. About 10% patients have both side of face too.

2. Nevus of Ota for both side

The pigmentation is called as Bilateral Ota, Acquired Ota. It looks similar to the Ota but mainly occurs in the younger generation and mostly around the eyes, side of the forehead, on both sides of the nose. It shows blue-brown or blue gray spots symmetrically.

4. Partial Unilateral Lentiginosis (PUL)

Partial Unilateral means the group of small pigmented spots on one half of the body. If the spot gets and make a group, it looks like aging spot. Sometimes, it is also confused with Nevus of Ota.

Café-Au-Lait Spots are mostly appeared in less than 3 diseases in healthy adults. There are 6 or more spots with a size of 15mm or more. We need to doubts that that is Café-Au spots as a neurofibroma.
About 60% of patients who have Ota spots might appear around their eyes and it causes their conjunctiva and sclera of the eyes. Ota spots are not connected to health problems, but it’s very rarely that there is a possibility of malignant black people.

Q. How to treat for birthmark?

The Ota spots are treated by general laser treatment using high energy laser in interval of 1 or 2 months. It make the scabs on the treated area. It’s painful and can’t do any daily routine everyday. It make more pigmentation and scar, so it’s difficult to treat them.

But, there is the laser with using lower energy and is treated for only target of area with less painful. Without blooding and scabs, it’s treated by once a month or 2 months. Especially, Café- Au-Lait Spot is treated earlier in children than adults because the pigmentation is treated well when the size is small by Low-power laser therapy to minimize pain and discomfort. It is better to treat infants early.
