This past weekend, a friend of mine who got married last October finally invited me and another friend to her new home for lunch (we hadn't seen her since the wedding). It was a small, very old apartment building in a quiet part of town. I was not expecting much of the home because the building itself was just plain, boring bricks, but the interior was something completely different altogether - clean, sophisticated, brightly colored and cozy. I guess that's what you get when you marry an interior designer!
Anyway, I digress. So her living room wall, as is the case for most newlyweds, was full of framed wedding photos. All brides are beautiful, of course, and this friend of mine was no exception. She was the perfect example of elegant grace, her smile radiant and simply glowing. One particular photo stood out; her torso was turned to the camera, head turned to the left, eyes gazing lovingly into her husband's. We made exclamations of admiration at this photo, to which my friend replied that her shoulders had to be completely photoshopped off for that cut because she didn't think to get a botox injection in time.
Confused? You might not be, if you know what overdeveloped trapezius muscles are. The trapezius (traps) is a muscle that supports the shoulders and arms, running vertically from the back of the neck down the spine, and extending horizontally to the shoulders. If these muscles are overdeveloped, they may cause your neck to look shorter and your shoulder line rather masculine. It may also be the cause of neck/shoulder pain.
As a woman, overdeveloped trapezius can be very unwanted. We all want that slender, elegant shoulder line, especially if you're expected to wear a strapless dress, and more especially if you're going to take a photo in that dress, to be framed and hung on your living room wall for years. Unfortunately, photoshop does not apply to real life, though I wish it were possible... believe me, I'd be fixing a lot more than just my shoulder line!
No; instead, we provide a solution for that via a simple botox injection.
Now, one way to shrink overdeveloped trapezius is by atrophy - if muscles are not used for a prolonged period of time, they will shrink. But it's difficult to just stop using your shoulders, right? That's like saying you can't use your arms, since everything is connected. Botox injections paralyze muscles of the injected area, eventually lowering the trapezius muscle to create a feminine shoulder line and the appearance of a longer neck, without you having to make much effort yourself. This can actually help with chronic neck/shoulder pain as well, pain that is caused by overdeveloped muscles.
Botox for the trapezius is also known in Korea as a collarbone injection, since it can help your collarbone resurface from under what was previously overdeveloped muscles.
So the solution for masculine, muscular shoulders is actually a lot simpler than most people think. An injection is not too expensive either; it's a popular treatment for women like my friend, who are preparing for weddings, but it's also a good option if you are concerned about your shoulder line in general.
