Everyday Skin Care Rules/Tips for Acne Patients

Professional skin treatment for acne can be, while the best option available, admittedly costly. I'm sure many of us at one point in our lives had tried some sort of home remedy as to avoid paying a visit to the dermatologist. And with the massive inflow of information found on the web, it can be difficult to choose which instructions and tips to follow. That is why today, I am providing a set of guidelines suggested by our very own dermatologists, on ways you can take care of your acne-prone skin. Skin care is not just a one-time action; it needs to be habitual and consistent if you want to see improvement.

*Disclaimer: Not all products will necessarily work for your skin. If you find that a product makes your skin worse, please don't use it just because it was recommended!

1. Face Washing
Wash your face twice a day, keeping it short and simple (KISS rule applies here too!).

Recommended cleansers:
  • Dove soap
  • Clear & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser
  • Cetaphil DermaControl Oil-Control Foam Wash
  • BIODERMA Sensibio H2O Cleansing Water

DO NOT: Use cleansing oil, wash multiple times, scrub/exfoliate, use foam cleansers with beads

2. Sun Protection

Recommended sunscreens:
  • Renewme Oil-Free Sun Cream
  • SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense
  • Johnson & Johnson Baby Daily Sun Protection Lotion
  • BIODERMA Photoderm Laser
  • Theraderm Orga Sunblock

3. Base Makeup

Heavy makeup is obviously a no-no for acne. If you must, makeup base + powder should be about it. Foundation and cosmetic BB cream should be avoided, especially air-cushions. Here are some powder products we recommend, along with foundations and BB creams that are at least better than average if you can't live without. :)

Powders:
  • Kryolan Blending Powder
  • Innisfree Mineral Creamy Pact
  • Mamonde Powder Pacts
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Powder Pact
Foundation:
  • Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation
  • Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse
  • La Roche-Posay Toleriane Teint Fluid Foundation
BB/CC Cream:
  • Atopalm BB Cream
  • Alex Cosmetic Royal BB Cream
  • Banila Co. It Radiant Multiple CC Cream

4. Makeup

For eyeshadow, stick to beige/nude tones if possible.
For brows, we recommend Innisfree products. Do not use powder cakes such as MAC Brow Shader.
For blusher, do not use cream types (powder cake type only).
No manicure!

5. Moisturizing

Drink plenty of water and use a humidifier. Apply moisturizer (Renewme Intensive Moisturizer) frequently!
DO NOT: Use facial mist, go to sauna, or do hot yoga.

6. Shampoo/Conditioner

DO: Use mild, non-irritant shampoos for sensitive skin, such as Atopalm, Dr. Ato, Physiogel, and Cetaphil.
DO: Change your pillow covers everyday.
DON'T use the following shampoos:

  • Elastine/Kerasys
  • Hair loss shampoos
  • Shampoos with oriental herbs
7. Toothpaste

Use toothpastes that include baking soda, such as:
  • Arm & Hammer Dental Care
  • Arm & Hammer Enamel Care
  • Arm & Hammer Complete Care
8. Shaving

Use an electric razor. Recommended shaving cream: Gillette Fusion HydraGel

9. Foods to Avoid
  • Dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, cream, protein shakes)
  • Greasy meat (samgyeopsal, fried chicken etc.)
  • Sweets (ice cream, chocolate, coffee mix)
  • Fast food (burgers, pizza, ramen)
  • Foods with high GI (white rice, bread, noodles)
  • Seaweed (dried laver, miyeok/wakame, kelp)
  • Vegetable oils (Omega-6, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, sesame oil)

Avoiding alcohol and smoking is also something to be avoided, though it's not a food.

10. Foods to Eat

  • Vegetables
  • Grains
  • Omega-3 (tuna, mackerel, mackerel pike)
  • Zinc/selenium (nutritional supplements, vitamins)
