Botox Injections for Facial Wrinkles in Seoul Korea

Blog contribution by Dr. Ko Na Young of our Hwagok branch. View original posting here.

I received a botox injection between my eyes and on my forehead just a few days ago, since my wrinkles had started to bother me again and I decided I couldn't let them be anymore.

Botox is a general term for treatments that use a commercialized solution of botulinum toxin A. At Renewme Skin Clinic, we use the U.S. brand Allergan as well as a Korean brand, Meditoxin.

Botulinum toxin is secreted from anaerobic bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. By blocking neurotransmiters in the nerve endings (particularly acethylcholine), botox causes paralysis in muscle, and was first used to treat dystonia, or abnormal muscle contractions such as eye twitching. However, during treatment, it was discovered that botox injections also remove wrinkles, and from then was used for cosmetic purposes too. Today, we use botox injections not only for muscle contractions, but for a much wider range of purposes, including hyperhidrosis, chronic migraines, wrinkle removal, calf contouring, and square jaw reduction.

The advantage - and perhaps disadvantage - of botox is that effects are not permanent and will fade after about 4-6 months. Some patients might worry that once you start botox, you will need regular injections for the rest of your life. However, wrinkles only get deeper with age. Deep wrinkles, especially glabellar lines (frown lines), may give off a bad impression and are aesthetically displeasing. Furthermore, old and deepened wrinkles can become permanent lines on your face, just like a scar. Eventually it can get too deep for even botox injections to treat. Dermal fillers might help for severe cases, but that too, may not provide a complete solution.

This is why botox injections are recommended early on, to prevent wrinkles from deepening. Frown lines or habitual expressions only get worse over time, but the progress can be deterred with a simple injection.

I have also treated my parents with botox injections and they are pleased with the results. My father, especially, has had quite deep frown lines, but after the injection looks much warmer. At first, results may look awkward and unnatural, but the facial expression will improve slowly over time. For deep wrinkles, I recommend small, frequent injections for gradual and natural results, rather than trying to smooth all the wrinkles with just one injection. It is important to understand the facial structure of the patient in order to yield the most satisfactory results.

For botox injections in other areas and now just for wrinkles (such as the jawline and calves), effects will increase the more you receive treatment. For square jaws, injections are recommended every 3-4 months at first, but as muscles deteriorate over time, effects for one injection will last longer and will only be recommended every 6-8 months. If you have thick and muscular calves, you will see them shrinking little by little with regular botox treatment.

Some people have had bad experiences with botox at other clinics, because the injections had left their facial expressions appear frozen and unnatural. This is because we all have different amounts of muscles in our faces. Normally, our muscles start to weaken after around age 50. Female patients with thin skin may also have weak facial muscles. For such cases, it is crucial to adjust the number of units injected.

Excessive botox not only looks unnatural; it may cause discomfort in everyday activities. Facial muscles need a certain amount of movement to look natural, but if your expressions are paralyzed, you may look quite frightening, to be frank. On the bright side, this is only temporary, as effects do fade eventually.

I myself have been a fan of botox injections for a few years now. In the earlier days, a dermatologist colleague of mine injected too much botox into my face and for a few months my forehead felt very heavy. Now, I know better to make sure to regulate my own injections for each area I wish to have treated. I don't like drastic botox injections because I prefer natural results - but this is only my personal preference. Patients at our clinic still have total control over how much they wish to have injected.
