The MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak in South Korea has been causing panic across the whole country ever since the first case was reported in late May, from a man in his sixties who had traveled in Saudi Arabia and brought home the virus with him. Schools and stores are temporarily closing; thousands are being quarantined; visitors are cancelling their trips to Korea; people are wearing protective masks everywhere and the bustling shopping districts of Seoul are relatively empty even during peak hours on weekends.
We have also seen a sharp decrease in international patients at Renewme Skin Clinic, which I am sure is the same case for many other clinics in Korea. With all the rumors going around (and there have been some ridiculous ones out there too) especially amidst the vast ocean of information called the Internet, it's hard to decide which claims to scoff at and which to take seriously.
The general facts so far are that MERS is not airborne, it usually spreads in hospitals among patients or people who are/were in close contact with patients, and though it's in the same family as SARS, the virus is not as serious or deadly. However, it wouldn't hurt to take basic precautions since you never know how the virus might mutate. If you decide to go ahead with your travels in Korea, or if you already live in Korea, do remember to keep your hands sanitized and avoid overly crowded places if possible.
If there is anything good to be taken from this, I suppose it's that people are paying more attention to basic hygiene, such as washing hands frequently, covering up coughs/sneezes and the likes. Hopefully this will lead to healthier habits overall in the future.
For the time being, anyway, we hope everyone remains safe and that the situation will be under control soon. Fingers crossed!
