Procedures in Korea: Which Cosmetic Skin Treatments Would the Dermatologist Recommend?

We visit the dermatologist for a wide number of reasons; this is completely to be expected, considering the skin is the body's largest organ and is constantly exposed to external factors such as sunlight, wounds, irritating substances and such. And in Korea especially, an increasing number of patients visit skin clinics for cosmetic reasons just as much as medical.

Director of our Hwagok branch Dr. Ko Na Young addressed the 4 most common cosmetic concerns that our clinic patients tend to have. This does not include medical procedures such as warts, acne, rosacea, scars, or hair loss.

1. Pigmentation: blemishes, melasma, freckles etc.
2. Volume: sunken cheeks, forehead, temples, tear trough, nasolabial folds etc.
3. Sagging: jawline, double chin, marionette lines etc.
4. Skin tone: exfoliation, sebum, large pores, dry skin etc.

The treatments generally recommended for each concern is as follows:
1. Pigmentation: laser toning, IPL, Excel V etc.
2. Volume: dermal filler, fat grafting, Sculptra etc.
3. Sagging: Ultherapy, Thermage, thread lift
4. Skin tone: chemical peels, AquaPeel, DermaShine, fractional laser etc.

Seems pretty simple, right? If only it really were!

Patients normally have more than one concern, most of which can't really fall under one strict category. To treat everything would mount up to quite a lot of money, so you would need to prioritize before selecting procedures for your face. For example, most patients over 30 tend to lose their baby fat and experience the beginning stages of sagging skin. For such cases we could recommend the filler first, since adding volume to the face can naturally lift the jawline as well.

Below is one of our staff, who received dermal filler injection for her sunken cheeks and chin. Her face looks a lot smaller now, and much more defined.

Another popular treatment at our clinic is for facial contouring. Asians tend to have protruding mouths, which can be fixed by adding filler to the frontal chin - this can also create a narrower face and the so-called V-line. Another way to create this ideal facial shape is to fill in all the sunken areas in the cheeks, temples, and forehead, while reducing fat in the cheekbone and jaw area to create a slimmer jawline.

These are, of course, just some tips to consider and do not apply to every patient. Best of all would be to visit our clinic to consult our dermatologists before deciding anything!
