Side Effects of Dermal Filler

Dermal filler, an injection procedure that restores lack of volume or shape in the face, has become so popular and common especially in Korea, that by now it's considered a casual and easy treatment, much like, say, getting eyebrows waxed or something. In reality; while fillers can indeed be quite simple and fast, with little downtime and long lasting effects, it can still come with complications that everyone should fully understand before deciding on treatment for themselves.

To list a few possible side effects, fillers can cause allergic reactions if the substance is something that is not already present in your body - fillers made of hyaluronic acid or autologous fat tend to be safer since they're substances we already contain. Other side effects may include redness, swelling and/or bruising, most of which will subside within a few days/weeks. In some cases, the filler will cause one, or a series of small bumps near the procedure area. This can either naturally go away or be reversed by small injections of hyaluronidase. Extremely severe side effects, which are quite rare but still possible, are skin necrosis (skin death) and nerve damage which might even lead to permanent blindness for procedures around the eyes.

Sounds a bit scary, doesn't it? Luckily, such side effects are very uncommon, especially when administered by an experienced dermatology specialist. In Korea, it's not illegal for general practitioners to inject fillers on patients. Treatments by such doctors can be much less expensive, with the same good results. The problem, however, arises when the occasional side effect does occur. Unfortunately, a doctor without training in dermatology most likely will not have the knowledge in treating or reversing side effects. This can only be done by a trained dermatologist; not even a visit to the emergency room will help. Therefore, it is crucial that you find the right doctor who possesses the necessary skills and technique in both administering and reversing dermal filler. You definitely want to go with the option that has the least risk and can ensure professional care in the odd chance that anything might go wrong.

Stay informed, people, and good luck!
