Tattoos have a long history and throughout the years have served a lot more purposes as we might have originally thought. One thing I noticed while translating for our English speaking patients is that a lot of foreigners are actually quite affectionate towards their moles. I suppose they're also called "beauty marks" for a reason; they can give your face character and uniqueness, which is considered positive in many individualistic Western cultures.
