"Are you okay today? You look tired."
"I'm perfectly fine. It's just my face."
How annoying is it to hear that all the time? If you've had loads of conversations even remotely similar to the one above, this blog post is definitely for you. I mean, it really can get exasperating, you know; to realize that regardless of how you're feeling that day, no matter how rejuvenated and alert you feel, people are always thinking that you look tired. Hmmm... or actually, I can't pick which is worse: that, or dying inside while outwardly you look perfectly healthy and energized, your face not even reflecting a fraction of your pain.
Unnecessary dilemmas aside (I should stop getting so sidetracked all the time), the biggest perpetrator of a tired looking face would be sunken/sagging under-eyes with deep, dark shadows. They appear mostly when you lack sleep or when you're under a lot of stress. Even worse, they make you look older. You might have read in a novel or something about someone who goes through a stressful period, and they end up "aging a few years" in a super short period of time. Gaunt, aggravated faces, when presented in photos or even your imagination, usually includes sunken and dark under-eyes as well.
Besides creams and covering up with makeup (which might alleviate temporarily but can worsen in the long run), what are some treatments you can consider for those eye bags? At Renewme Skin Clinic we offer a number of options catered to different causes of dark circles/bags. The most important advantage of the treatments we provide might be that they are all minimally invasive, which means you can avoid any big surgeries or major downtime, but still see results. How cool is that? You can go back to work after a weekend as if nothing happened!
1. Radiofrequency Treatment - INNOfill
INNOfill is an intradermal procedure. A needle is inserted into the tear trough area, after which radiofrequency is emitted from the tip to stimulate collagen regeneration. The result is tightened and rejuvenated skin from within. This procedure is recommended for sagging eye bags that are caused by lack of elasticity. You can also read a full account at this previous blog post.
2. Dermal Filler
This is the more commonly known procedure. Hyaluronic acid fillers (popular brands used at our clinic are Yvoire and Restylane) are a great way to restore lost volume under the eyes. If this area is sunken, they can cast shadows that make your dark circles look even worse. They can also help with some deep wrinkles that form under the skin. Though not always perfectly effective, if you happen to be the right candidate, you will see some pretty good results that last up to about a year. I have seen plenty of satisfied patients that say they don't have to go through that old "you looked tired" routine anymore after this procedure.
3. Laser Treatment
Another cause of dark circles might actually be the blood vessels that show through the skin. The skin directly underneath the eyes can be very thin, and more susceptible to wrinkles and fine lines - which also means that maintaining moisture in this area is very important. Not necessarily expensive eye cream; any moisturizer should do. Anyway, the veins showing through can give your tear troughs a bluish tinge. This can be especially hard to treat because the best solution would be to thicken the skin, which with current medical technology is not possible. And if your skin in this area is especially thin, dermal fillers might not work either because the clear filler solution might reflect the colors from the blood vessels underneath, sort of acting like a magnifying glass and intensifying the hue, which would be the total opposite of what you're aiming for.
Luckily, if you happen to have the right type of blood vessels in the right spots, they can be treated with a laser, specifically called Excel V. Excel V works well on vascular conditions such as spider veins and rosacea, and with regular treatment sessions (usually 3-5, spaced about a month apart), elimination of these blood vessels can make your under eyes appear brighter.
Now, before you decide which treatments you want, it's most important that you consult the doctor first. You might think that you need option A, and then discover that the treatment you needed was actually option B. Discuss your skin condition with an experienced dermatologist at Renewme Skin Clinic and select the right procedure for you.
