Keratosis Pilaris - Facts & Treatments

You know those goosebumps you get when you're cold, or terrified, or have an upset stomach from too much spicy chicken wings last night, that suddenly hits you when you're in the middle of the street without any restrooms nearby, and leaves you in cold sweat, unable to concentrate on anything else but the pain in your stomach and the yearning for the comforts of your toilet back home?

Oops, got carried away a bit there (totally not coming from personal experience, by the way). But you know what I mean. For most of us this is just a temporary phenomenon we experience in generally unpleasant situations. However, there are some people who have a certain skin condition that makes them look like they've got goosebumps all the time. This condition is also known as keratosis pilaris. Symptoms normally appear in small, hard bumps on the skin that are white or red, occasionally itchy, but virtually harmless. They're caused by the buildup of keratin, the protein that protects your skin from harmful substances. This buildup forms into plugs that block the openings of hair follicles; doctors have yet to discover why this happens.

Keratosis pilaris is also more common in patients with existing conditions such as atopic dermatitis, or dry skin. Symptoms can get worse during dryer winters, so make sure to keep your skin thoroughly moisturized if you think this applies to you. As for actual treatment, there is unfortunately no cure. At our clinic, we offer Aladdin Peel, a strong exfoliator made of natural substances that removes impurities and rejuvenates the skin from deeper layers of the skin. One important thing to know before you think about proceeding with treatment: this might alleviate the bumpiness and make the skin feel smoother, but the visible reddish spots will still most likely remain intact. Aladdin Peel is also quite effective for acne scars, blemishes, and fine lines, and are applicable to areas such as the back, arms, and face. You can read more about what an Aladdin Peel session is like by clicking here.

On the bright side, keratosis pilaris normally occurs in children and teenagers, and the symptoms will naturally disappear with age. So let's keep our fingers crossed, or perhaps maybe just adapt a positive I-don't-give-a-damn attitude and learn to love yourself regardless of what kind of skin you have. Stay beautiful, people! ;-)
