Beware of burns in the winter!

I ain't talking about sunburns, though UV protection is still important even in the wintertime. Cold weather means we humans turn to modern-day technology to keep us warm at home, because blankets and sweaters just aren't enough. We've got electric heaters, as well as microwaveable heat packs, electric blankets, electric hand warmers, and probably more that I can't think of right now - you'll be surprised how creative people can get these days when it comes to keeping warm. And for example, if you're not careful enough, and leave your skin in contact with something hot and fall asleep, you may fall victim to burns. The severity of burns can vary, depending on how deep in the skin it reaches. Here is a quick review of the different burns you may come across. 1. First Degree Burns First degree burns affect the most superficial, outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. This could be a typical sunburn, or can be caused by intense heat that touches the s...

How to Treat a Red Face (Flushing/Blushing/Rosacea)

Blushing has always been one of my worst enemies ever since I was a child, and I'm sure many can relate. This flaming redness in the face can be caused by any number of reasons: when you're embarrassed, when it's hot, when it's cold, when you're angry, when you're drunk... it can be genetics, or environmentally triggered, or caused by other health conditions. In any case, the redness is caused when the blood vessels underneath the skin are dilated and show through; and any form of redness is considered a vascular condition which fortunately can be treated by a dermatologist. There isn't one magical cure that will rid you of all redness in one session, but with regular treatments and persistence you can stop worrying about covering up your color with makeup. Excel V is the most advanced and effective laser for treating vascular skin conditions. Red acne marks, rosacea, spider veins (telangiectasia), you name it; this baby can treat it all. Compared to ...

2015 SoYoung Asia Medical Cosmetics Award Ceremony - Dr. Ha Ji Hyun

SoYoung, an online platform in China for users to share their experiences in cosmetic surgeries and procedures, hosted the 2015 Asia Medical Cosmetics Award Ceremony, in which Renewme Skin Clinic dermatologist Dr. Ha was nominated as the "Most Trusted Korean Doctor." Last weekend she flew over to Beijing to attend the ceremony and receive her award: a representation of a year of hard work and well-earned love and trust from her Chinese patients. We left bright and early on Saturday morning, and once we arrived at Beijing a staff member of SoYoung was waiting for us to escort us to the hotel at which the ceremony would be held: China World Summit Wing, a five-star hotel that was really high up. The reception was located on the 64th floor, which is higher than the tallest building in Seoul! From the windows we were able to see nearby downtown and headquarters of CCTV, China's national broadcasting station. After checking in, Dr. Ha reread her sched...

Shurink (Ultraformer 3) HIFU for Non-Invasive Lifting

Dr. Ko Na Young of our Hwagok branch wrote a blog post a few months back when she tried Shurink on her mother. Seven weeks later she compared the photos to share with all of y'all, so you can see realistic examples of what kind of results to expect from Shurink. Shurink, or any HIFU treatment, uses ultrasound energy to cause thermal-coagulation in the deep layers of the skin known as the SMAS. This in turn results in regenerated collagen and improved skin elasticity. Collagen regeneration usually takes about 90 days, which means best results show after about 2-3 months. Shurink can be applied to most aging areas of the face, including double chin, jawline, cheeks, nasolabial folds, sagging eyelids, fine lines, and more. Before the procedure, Dr. Ko's mother still looks lovely and young for her age, but you can see that her upper cheeks are dimpled (known as the Indian band in Korea) and deeper lines from the nose to mouth (nasolabial fold). 7 weeks later, her lin...

INNOfill Laser for Removing Under Eye Bags - Seoul, Korea

Of the many indicators of age that blossom as the years go by, sagging skin is one of the most visibly obvious ones. They say skin starts to age in your twenties, so don't consider yourself too young and start taking good care of your skin while you can! Slowly but surely, all humans lose tightness and elasticity in the skin, making the face look droopier and more tired. This also causes deep creases in the forehead, eyes, cheeks, chin, just about everywhere. Although it is not possible to stop aging altogether (at least God was fair in this aspect), there are procedures to at least slow down these effects, to help patients achieve a youthful, healthier, and fresher appearance. As the skin tissues lose elasticity, they are no longer able to hold up the fat cells under the eyes, which in result causes the fat to protrude, or stick out. The simplest solution as suggested by many plastic surgery clinics is to remove the fat altogether. However, this can leave the excess skin even...

Bingo Bread - Recommended Bakery in Gangnam

Hands down, the most popular bakery chain in Korea is Paris Baguette; they've got branches in other countries, and literally one in every neighborhood in Korea. It's like the McDonald's of bread, and their reputation I personally think is well deserved, as the bread, cakes and pastries there are all seriously delicious. Sweet, buttery, savory, all the good stuff. However, after years of consuming bread at a franchise, there are times where you crave something that's not so factory made; something with more of a homemade touch. Or something a bit more luxurious and less commercial. For that, there are a few private bakeries scattered around Seoul that are not so widely known but highly valued all the same. I don't know if it's some sort of secret recipe, or whether the bakers have studied abroad or something, but the bread from these shops are otherworldly and inexplicably delicious. Here is one such bakery in Seocho-dong (Gangnam), straight down the street fro...

Best Hair Removal Method?

Smooth, hairless, and silky skin is what most women are after these days, especially during the summer when our limbs are exposed for the majority. If you're one of those people struggling with stubborn body hair, you may have tried every sort of method there is for hair loss, in hopes of finding the best and most effective, yet affordable one. Dr. Yang, head of our Seocho branch, made an appearance on a KBS news program to discuss various methods and effects of hair removal. The methods tested on this program were hair removal cream, waxing strips, epilators, and razors. All of these are common home remedies, but are all temporary solutions that cannot prevent the hairs from growing back. Plus, using hair removal creams also has its risk of side effects such as dermatitis or folliculitis, inflammation in the skin or follicles. The safest and most effective hair removal method, according to Dr. Yang, is by laser. When done correctly by professional, laser hair removal lea...
