We humans are born with noses of all shapes and sizes. Flat, pointy, curvy, wide, narrow, you name it. Some countries or cultures like to attribute a certain type of characteristic to a particular nose shape, and in physiognomy, a study that interprets someone's personality based on his or her appearance (a common practice in older times); the shape of your nose, as well as other parts of the body, can generally/vaguely determine your life, your personality, and sometimes even your wealth and future. Of course, these days none of this is widely believed, but it is fun to study different nose shapes and guess what they might mean.
In modern times, noses are studied and considered more for aesthetic purposes rather than superstition. We all want to look aesthetically pleasing, and different countries have different standards for what makes a nice looking nose. That being said, I've done a quick search of what different cultures think of the aquiline nose, also known as the Roman nose or hook nose. This is the type of nose that has a prominent nose bridge, making the nose look like a bird's beak, or a hook. It can also give off the impression of a dent on the upper nose bridge as you can see on the photo on the right. (And I am a bit off the track at this point, but the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "hooked nose" is Professor Severus Snape, as his nose was one of his most distinguishable features mentioned in the book series - can I get a holla from all my fellow Harry Potter fans?!)
Now, the hook nose can be found in many different regions and races and is not particular to any ethnic group, although it seems this nose shape was used back in the Nazi days to distinguish Jews. In even earlier times, when it was also called "Roman nose," this feature was considered a symbol of beauty, intelligence, and nobility. Even today, the aquiline nose can make a person look strong-willed and firm.
In Korea, however, and perhaps other East Asian countries, the aquiline nose is not looked upon in a positive light. It might be due to the fact that Asian features are much flatter and we prefer subtle curves rather than prominent lines or bones. In any case, rhinoplasty is an immensely popular surgery in Korea - which is not a surprise considering that Korea is one of the plastic surgery capitals of the world. Aquiline noses are not exactly to correct, though. The protruding bump, the indent, the downward-pointing nose tip present difficulties for surgeons and often times the patient would need a second surgery. Which is why we might recommend a hyaluronic acid dermal filler instead, to fill in the dent and slightly correct the shape of the nose without any major surgery or downtime.
A retouch is needed every year or so to maintain the shape, but it is such a simple procedure, no hassle and finished within about 15 minutes. However, do keep in mind that simple does not mean easy and without complications. The nose is closely connected with blood vessels that lead to the eyes - in very rare cases, side effects may even include blindness. This is why it is imperative to find a certified dermatology specialist to inject the filler, someone who can foresee any serious problems in case any discomforts occur (usually in the form of severe pain, redness, bruising, or swelling) and administer the proper treatments before any real damage is done. Such cases are extremely rare, of course, but to be on the safest side possible it is strongly recommended that you find a dermatologist with plenty of experience.
