The National Police has teamed up with the Korean Dermatological Association to carry out a project called "Eraser of Love," which provides free tattoo removal procedures for teenagers who need help reversing spontaneous mistakes made during youth. Dr. Choi Woo Jin of Renewme Skin Clinic Bundang has joined in as an administering physician, the details of which have been reported in The Seoul Shinmun. Lee Jinhyung (17) from Gyeonggi-do Icheon wishes he could forever erase from his life the day he allowed himself to be tattooed three years ago. Parents divorced early on, Lee grew up living with only his mother and spent most of his adolescence resenting his family background. When he was 14, Lee happened to be introduced to a man in his thirties who called himself a tattooist. This man offered to buy Lee drinks in return for receiving a tattoo; Lee, who was more than happy at the prospect of free drinks, lightheartedly followed along.
When Lee awoke the next day, he was appalled at what he saw in the mirror: a huge carp, carelessly scrawled across half of his back as if a child had scribbled on it.
Lee had tried his best to cover up the tattoo. He never took his clothes off in front of other people. He researched tattoo removal procedures but couldn't even dream of it because the price would reach millions of won. He had quit taking dance classes and nearly gave up on his dream to become a singer.
Lee's story caught the attention of the school's guidance counselor, and eventually reached the ears of school police officer Kim Byeongok. Kim took the trouble to visit Lee at his home, hear the full story, and add him to the list of applicants for the "Eraser of Love" last June 19th.
"Eraser of Love" is a program arranged by the National Police and Korean Dermatological Association (KDA) to provide teenagers with free tattoo removal treatment. The business contract was signed on May 28th, and since then 25 participating clinics of the KDA, have treated 46 teenagers like Lee. Last September, 178 students have been added to the list of applicants.
It was dermatologist Dr. Choi Woo Jin of Renewme Skin Clinic who performed laser tattoo removal on Lee. Treatment started on August 12th, and the third session was held last November 7th. "I felt so bad for this young man who had to carry such a burden due to an irresponsible adult, and I wanted to help," says Dr. Choi.
Currently, Lee's tattoo is 60-70% removed (second photo). Dr. Choi has provided good news that with a couple more sessions, Lee can see up to 80-90% removal.
As Lee's tattoo fades, his dreams become clearer. Recently, Lee has displayed his brilliant dance moves at a nearby middle school festival. "Make sure to give me an autograph when you become a famous celebrity," Dr. Choi says to Lee, making him blush like the dream-filled teenager he is.
